I get tons of questions about how i edit my vintage dust photos on @robinsebastians. And here is a "How to edit your instagram pictures like an old polaroid with dust", FOR FREE. There are many apps that allows you to turn your pictures into polaroids with dust, called dust filters. The app i use is called "Afterlight". To get the best results, there are a few pointers to remember: Just throwing dust on a photo does not create the deep or shine that you normally would get from a polaroid (for the younger viewer: polaorids are old photos usually with scratches and became super popular on instagram last year).
1. The key is to always shoot your pictures with a flash, and if not, have another light source in the picture like sunrays or over exposed parts. Start by uploading the picture you want to "Afterlight".
2. The first thing you want to do is add blur. Exaggerate with blur (i used -50 here) to create a "plastic surface" on your photo.
3. Now there are several filters you can use to fake colorways, i often use the red/orange called Ablaze.
4. Tone down your highlights (the Ablaze filter already does that for you but for the others, go to "Edits" and choose "Highlight". Turn it down to -35.
5. Here are the fun part! Since we in step 1 made a "plastic surface", the dust you choose will create an illusion of a polaroid, give the picture a specific deep. My favorite is number 12.
6. The last touch, and maybe the most important, is to add a reflection on top of the "plastic surface" so it looks real. Number 4 is a really good one since it's transparent. Don't go any higher then +8 on this.
There you go, a perfect polaroid picture to share! You can create your own for free or if you love the one i have custom made for my instagram - you can purchase my filter here and install directly to you phone!
